The Story

It was introduced on January 28, 1999 and referred to the House Education committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 23, 1999. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes by a vote of 18–1, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On April 29, 1999 the House voted to pass it with changes. It crossed to the Senate on April 29, 1999 and was referred to the Senate Education committee. The committee held a public hearing on May 19, 1999. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. On June 8, 1999 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. On June 8, 1999 the Senate adopted “Reconsideration” on a voice vote. A floor amendment (1512), offered by Sen. Hollingworth, was adopted on a voice vote on June 8, 1999, changing the text of the bill. On June 16, 1999 the House voted to agree to the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on June 17, 1999 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on June 18, 1999, making it Chapter 135 of the session laws. It took effect on June 18, 1999. The committee held a work session on February 14, 2000.
