  • Status: Signed into law
  • Term: 1999-2000
  • House committee: Election Law
  • Senate committee: Public Affairs
  • Subject: Elections
  • Chapter law: 12

The Story

It was introduced on January 7, 1999 and referred to the House Election Law committee. The committee held public hearings on January 21, 1999 and January 26, 1999. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes unanimously, 17–0, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On February 16, 1999 the House voted to pass it with changes. It crossed to the Senate on February 18, 1999 and was referred to the Senate Public Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 10, 1999. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. On April 8, 1999 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. The bill was enrolled on April 14, 1999 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on April 19, 1999, making it Chapter 12 of the session laws. It took effect on June 18, 1999.
