The Story

It was introduced on January 29, 1998 and referred to the Senate Insurance committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 4, 1998. The committee met in executive session on March 18, 1998 to vote on its recommendation. The majority recommended that the Senate pass it, and the minority recommended that the Senate pass it with changes, by a vote of 4–3. On April 2, 1998 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote. It crossed to the House and was referred to the House Commerce committee. On April 9, 1998 the House adopted “Suspend Rules change rept date to 05/14/1998”, on a motion by Rep. Wheeler & Burling. The committee held a public hearing on April 14, 1998. The committee held work sessions on April 21, 1998, April 28, 1998 and May 6, 1998. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes by a vote of 11–3. On May 20, 1998 the House voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. On June 10, 1998 the Senate voted to agree to the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on June 18, 1998 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on June 26, 1998, making it Chapter 293 of the session laws. It took effect on August 25, 1998.
