  • House committee: Commerce
  • Senate committee: Executive Departments and Administration
  • Subject: Miscellaneous
  • Chapter law: 382

The Story

It was introduced on January 7, 1998 and referred to the Senate Executive Departments and Administration committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 29, 1998. The committee met in executive session on March 19, 1998 to vote on its recommendation. The committee voted unanimously, 7–0, to recommend that the Senate pass it with changes. On April 2, 1998 the Senate voted to pass it, then referred it on to the Senate Finance committee. The committee voted unanimously, 7–0, to recommend that the Senate pass it. On April 16, 1998 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote. It crossed to the House and was referred to the House Commerce committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 28, 1998. The committee held work sessions on May 5, 1998, May 6, 1998 and May 12, 1998. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes unanimously, 11–0, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. The bill was taken off the consent calendar on May 20, 1998. On May 20, 1998 the House voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. On June 4, 1998 the Senate voted to agree to the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on June 18, 1998 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor — and an enrolled bill amendment (2100) was adopted to correct technical errors found after passage. The governor signed it on June 26, 1998, making it Chapter 382 of the session laws. It took effect on August 25, 1998.
