The Story
It was introduced on January 7, 1998 and referred to the Senate Executive Departments and Administration committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 22, 1998. The committee voted unanimously, 7–0, to recommend that the Senate pass it with changes. On March 5, 1998 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. It crossed to the House on March 5, 1998 and was referred to the House Science, Technology and Energy committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 24, 1998. The committee met in executive session on March 31, 1998 to vote on its recommendation. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes by a vote of 14–1, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On April 9, 1998 the House voted to pass it with changes. On May 14, 1998 the Senate voted to agree to the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on May 21, 1998 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on June 2, 1998, making it Chapter 126 of the session laws. It took effect on June 2, 1998.
