The Story

It was introduced on January 7, 1998 and referred to the Senate Internal Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 5, 1998. The committee voted 5–1 to recommend that the Senate pass it with changes. On March 12, 1998 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. It crossed to the House on March 12, 1998 and was referred to the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 31, 1998. On April 9, 1998 the House adopted “Suspend Rules change rept date to 05/14/1998”, on a motion by Rep. Wheeler & Burling. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes unanimously, 14–0, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On May 20, 1998 the House voted to pass it with changes. On May 28, 1998 the Senate voted to agree to the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on June 4, 1998 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on June 15, 1998, making it Chapter 181 of the session laws. It took effect on June 15, 1998.
