The Story
It was introduced on January 7, 1998 and referred to the Senate Insurance committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 14, 1998. The committee voted unanimously, 8–0, to recommend that the Senate pass it with changes. On January 29, 1998 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. It crossed to the House on February 18, 1998 and was referred to the House Commerce committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 3, 1998. The committee held work sessions on March 17, 1998, March 24, 1998 and March 31, 1998. On April 9, 1998 the House adopted “Suspend Rules change rept date to 05/14/1998”, on a motion by Rep. Wheeler & Burling. The committee held a work session on April 14, 1998. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes by a vote of 14–1. On April 23, 1998 the House voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. On May 21, 1998 the Senate voted to agree to the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on June 4, 1998 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on June 15, 1998, making it Chapter 180 of the session laws. It took effect on July 1, 1998.
