SB 301 (1998)

relative to teacher renomination and the application of teacher professional and performance standards.

  • Status: Vetoed, override failed
  • Term: 1997-1998
  • House committee: Education
  • Senate committee: Education
  • Subject: Education - General

The Story

It was introduced on January 7, 1998 and referred to the Senate Education committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 4, 1998. The committee voted 4–3 to recommend that the Senate pass it with changes. On March 19, 1998 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a roll call 13–7. It crossed to the House on March 19, 1998 and was referred to the House Education committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 2, 1998. On April 9, 1998 the House adopted “Suspend Rules change rept date to 05/14/1998”, on a motion by Rep. Wheeler & Burling. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it by a vote of 11–5. On May 20, 1998 the House voted to pass it on a voice vote. An enrolled bill amendment (1897) was adopted on May 28, 1998. These correct technical errors found after passage. The bill was enrolled on June 18, 1998 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor — and an enrolled bill amendment (1897) was adopted on a voice vote to correct technical errors found after passage. The governor vetoed it on June 26, 1998. The legislature can override a veto with a two-thirds vote in both chambers. On June 30, 1998 the Senate voted 15–9 on overriding the governor's veto on a roll call, and the veto was sustained, failing to meet the two thirds threshold.
