The Story

It was introduced on January 29, 1997 and referred to the House Election Law committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 20, 1997. The majority of the committee recommended that the House send it back to committee by a vote of 15–2. On March 5, 1997 the bill was referred to the Election Law committee. The committee held work sessions on July 2, 1997, August 19, 1997 and September 25, 1997. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes unanimously, 10–0, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. The bill was taken off the consent calendar on January 7, 1998. On January 7, 1998 the House voted to study it after the session ends on a voice vote. The committee held work sessions on August 13, 1998, September 3, 1998 and October 6, 1998. The committee reported back on its interim study of the bill: “Recommended for Future Legislation”, by a vote of 12 to 0.
