HB 517-FN (1998)

relative to sentencing for aggravated felonious sexual assault when the victim is less than 13 years of age.

  • Status: Signed into law
  • Term: 1997-1998
  • House committee: Criminal Justice and Public Safety
  • Senate committee: Judiciary
  • Subject: Crimes, Criminal Procedure and Corrections
  • Chapter law: 7

The Story

It was introduced on January 9, 1997 and referred to the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 4, 1997. The majority recommended that the House pass it, and the minority recommended that the House kill it, by a vote of 10–8. On March 18, 1997 the House voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. It crossed to the Senate on March 27, 1997 and was referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 23, 1997. The committee voted unanimously, 8–0, to recommend that the Senate send it back to committee. The committee retained the bill, holding it for further work rather than reporting it out this year. The committee met in executive session on November 12, 1997 and January 7, 1998. The committee voted 6–1 to recommend that the Senate pass it with changes. On January 29, 1998 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. On March 5, 1998 the House voted to agree to the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on March 19, 1998 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on March 30, 1998, making it Chapter 7 of the session laws. It took effect on January 1, 1999.
