  • Term: 1997-1998

The Story

It was introduced on January 9, 1997 and referred to the House Health, Human Services and Elderly Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 19, 1997. The majority of the committee recommended that the House send it back to committee unanimously, 16–0, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On March 12, 1997 the bill was referred to the Health, Human Services and Elderly Affairs committee. The committee held work sessions on August 5, 1997, September 3, 1997, September 9, 1997 and September 24, 1997. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes by a vote of 17–1. On January 15, 1998 the House voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. It crossed to the Senate on January 29, 1998 and was referred to the Senate Insurance committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 21, 1998. The committee voted 5–1 to recommend that the Senate kill it. On April 30, 1998 the Senate adopted “Recommit” on a voice vote. The committee voted 5–1 to recommend that the Senate pass it with changes. On June 10, 1998 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. On June 10, 1998 the House voted to agree to the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on June 18, 1998 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor — and an enrolled bill amendment (2152) was adopted to correct technical errors found after passage. The governor signed it on June 25, 1998, making it Chapter 236 of the session laws. It took effect on July 1, 1998.
