The Story

It was introduced on January 7, 1998 and referred to the House Commerce committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 27, 1998. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes unanimously, 15–0, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. The bill was taken off the consent calendar on March 5, 1998. On March 19, 1998 the House voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. It crossed to the Senate on March 26, 1998 and was referred to the Senate Public Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 29, 1998. The committee voted 5–1 to recommend that the Senate pass it with changes. On May 14, 1998 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. On May 20, 1998 the House voted to agree to the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on June 4, 1998 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on June 15, 1998, making it Chapter 176 of the session laws. It took effect on June 15, 1998.
