HB 1414 (1998)
relative to review of non-renewal of teachers contracts.
- Status: Vetoed, override failed
- Term: 1997-1998
- House committee: Education
- Senate committee: Education
- Subject: Education - General
The Story
It was introduced on January 7, 1998 and referred to the House Education committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 11, 1998. The majority recommended that the House pass it with changes, and the minority recommended that the House kill it, by a vote of 15–3. On March 5, 1998 the House voted to pass it with changes on a roll call 218–122. It crossed to the Senate on March 19, 1998 and was referred to the Senate Education committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 15, 1998. The committee voted 4–3 to recommend that the Senate pass it. On May 14, 1998 the Senate voted to pass it on a roll call 15–9. The bill was enrolled on May 28, 1998 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor vetoed it on June 5, 1998. The legislature can override a veto with a two-thirds vote in both chambers. On June 18, 1998 the House voted 195–132 on overriding the governor's veto on a roll call, and the veto was sustained, failing to meet the two thirds threshold.
