- Status: Signed into law
- Term: 1997-1998
- House committee: Judiciary and Family Law

The Story
It was introduced on January 7, 1998 and referred to the House Judiciary and Family Law committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 17, 1998. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes by a vote of 11–2, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. The bill was taken off the consent calendar on March 5, 1998. On March 19, 1998 the House voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. It crossed to the Senate on March 26, 1998 and was referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 15, 1998. The committee voted 6–2 to recommend that the Senate pass it with changes. On May 14, 1998 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. On May 28, 1998 the House voted to reject the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. On June 10, 1998 the Senate adopted “Accede to Request for Committee of Conference” on a voice vote. A committee of conference met on June 15, 1998 to try to settle the differences between the two chambers' versions of the bill. On June 18, 1998 the Senate adopted “Conference Committee Report” on a voice vote. On June 18, 1998 the House adopted “Conference Committee Report” on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on June 18, 1998 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor — and an enrolled bill amendment (2282) was adopted to correct technical errors found after passage. The governor signed it on June 26, 1998, making it Chapter 335 of the session laws. It took effect on October 1, 1998.
