The Story
It was introduced on January 7, 1998 and referred to the House Commerce committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 13, 1998. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it unanimously, 17–0, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On January 29, 1998 the House voted to pass it, then referred it on to the House Finance committee. The committee held a work session on March 4, 1998. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it unanimously, 16–0, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On March 19, 1998 the House voted to pass it. It crossed to the Senate on March 26, 1998 and was referred to the Senate Banks committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 28, 1998. The committee met in executive session on May 12, 1998 to vote on its recommendation. The committee voted unanimously, 6–0, to recommend that the Senate pass it with changes. On May 21, 1998 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. On May 28, 1998 the House voted to reject the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. On June 10, 1998 the Senate adopted “Accede to Request for Committee of Conference” on a voice vote. A committee of conference met on June 15, 1998 to try to settle the differences between the two chambers' versions of the bill. On June 18, 1998 the Senate adopted “Conference Committee Report” on a voice vote. On June 18, 1998 the House adopted “Conference Committee Report” on a voice vote.
