The Story

It was introduced on January 9, 1997 and referred to the Senate Education committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 22, 1997. The committee voted 5–2 to recommend that the Senate pass it with changes. On February 13, 1997 the Senate voted to adopt it on a voice vote. It crossed to the House on February 19, 1997 and was referred to the House Education committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 27, 1997. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes unanimously, 15–0, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. The bill was taken off the consent calendar on April 23, 1997. On April 23, 1997 the House adopted “Recommit” on a voice vote. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes by a vote of 15–2, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On May 7, 1997 the House voted to adopt it. On May 8, 1997 the Senate voted to agree to the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on May 29, 1997 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on June 9, 1997, making it Chapter 129 of the session laws.
