SB 41 (1997)

relative to the time for filing requests for a hearing with the department of labor concerning violations of the whistleblowers' protection act.

  • Status: Vetoed, override failed
  • Term: 1997-1998
  • House committee: Labor, Industrial and Rehabilitative Services
  • Senate committee: Executive Departments and Administration
  • Subject: Employment

The Story

It was introduced on January 8, 1997 and referred to the Senate Executive Departments and Administration committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 16, 1997. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes. On January 23, 1997 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. It crossed to the House on February 19, 1997 and was referred to the House Labor, Industrial and Rehabilitative Services committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 25, 1997. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes by a vote of 11–4. On May 14, 1997 the House voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. On May 22, 1997 the Senate voted to agree to the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. An enrolled bill amendment () was adopted on a voice vote on May 29, 1997. These correct technical errors found after passage. The bill was enrolled on June 10, 1997 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor — and an enrolled bill amendment (0024) was adopted to correct technical errors found after passage. The governor vetoed it on June 21, 1997. The legislature can override a veto with a two-thirds vote in both chambers. On June 25, 1997 the Senate voted 15–9 on overriding the governor's veto on a roll call, and the veto was sustained, failing to meet the two thirds threshold.
