The Story

It was introduced on January 8, 1997 and referred to the Senate Insurance committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 27, 1997. The committee voted unanimously, 8–0, to recommend that the Senate pass it with changes. On February 6, 1997 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. It crossed to the House on February 19, 1997 and was referred to the House Health, Human Services and Elderly Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 13, 1997. The committee held a work session on March 18, 1997. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes unanimously, 17–0, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On April 2, 1997 the House voted to pass it with changes. On May 13, 1997 the Senate voted to reject the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. On May 20, 1997 the House adopted “Accede to Request for Committee of Conference” on a voice vote. A committee of conference met on June 3, 1997 to try to settle the differences between the two chambers' versions of the bill. On June 10, 1997 the House adopted “Conference Committee Report”. On June 10, 1997 the Senate adopted “Conference Committee Report” on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on June 10, 1997 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. An enrolled bill amendment () was adopted on June 10, 1997. These correct technical errors found after passage. The governor signed it on June 23, 1997, making it Chapter 331 of the session laws. It took effect on August 22, 1997.
