The Story

It was introduced on January 23, 1997 and referred to the Senate Insurance committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 10, 1997. The committee voted unanimously, 8–0, to recommend that the Senate pass it with changes. On March 13, 1997 the Senate adopted “Recommit” on a voice vote. The committee voted unanimously, 8–0, to recommend that the Senate pass it with changes. On April 3, 1997 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. It crossed to the House and was referred to the House Commerce committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 16, 1997. The committee held work sessions on April 29, 1997, May 7, 1997 and May 13, 1997. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes unanimously, 13–0, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On May 20, 1997 the House voted to pass it with changes. On May 28, 1997 the Senate voted to agree to the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on June 10, 1997 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. An enrolled bill amendment () was adopted on June 10, 1997. These correct technical errors found after passage. The governor signed it on June 23, 1997, making it Chapter 345 of the session laws. It took effect on January 1, 1998.
