The Story

It was introduced on January 8, 1997 and referred to the Senate Banks committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 16, 1997. On February 6, 1997 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. It crossed to the House on February 19, 1997 and was referred to the House Commerce committee. The committee held public hearings on March 25, 1997 and April 9, 1997. The committee held a work session on April 15, 1997. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes by a vote of 13–1, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On May 14, 1997 the House voted to pass it with changes. On May 20, 1997 the Senate voted to agree to the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on May 29, 1997 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on June 9, 1997, making it Chapter 161 of the session laws. It took effect on January 1, 1998.
