The Story
It was introduced on January 9, 1997 and referred to the Senate Executive Departments and Administration committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 7, 1997. The majority recommended that the Senate pass it with changes, and the minority recommended that the Senate kill it, by a vote of 5–3. On April 3, 1997 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. It crossed to the House and was referred to the House Executive Departments and Administration committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 15, 1997. The committee held a work session on April 23, 1997. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes unanimously, 15–0, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On May 7, 1997 the House voted to pass it with changes. On May 13, 1997 the Senate voted to agree to the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on May 29, 1997 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on June 9, 1997, making it Chapter 170 of the session laws. It took effect on June 9, 1997.
