  • Subject: Miscellaneous
  • Chapter law: 336

The Story

It was introduced on January 9, 1997 and referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 12, 1997. The committee voted unanimously, 7–0, to recommend that the Senate pass it with changes. On February 20, 1997 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. It crossed to the House and was referred to the House Health, Human Services and Elderly Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 20, 1997. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes by a vote of 14–1, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On April 2, 1997 the House voted to pass it with changes. On May 22, 1997 the Senate voted to reject the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. On May 29, 1997 the House adopted “Accede to Request for Committee of Conference”. A committee of conference met on June 3, 1997 to try to settle the differences between the two chambers' versions of the bill. On June 10, 1997 the House adopted “Conference Committee Report”. On June 10, 1997 the Senate adopted “Conference Committee Report” on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on June 10, 1997 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on June 23, 1997, making it Chapter 336 of the session laws. It took effect on January 1, 1998.
