The Story
It was introduced on January 9, 1997 and referred to the Senate Insurance committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 29, 1997. The committee voted 6–2 to recommend that the Senate pass it. On February 6, 1997 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote, then referred it on to the Senate Finance committee. On February 20, 1997 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote. It crossed to the House and was referred to the House Executive Departments and Administration committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 20, 1997. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it by a vote of 15–2, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On May 7, 1997 the House voted to pass it. The bill was enrolled on May 29, 1997 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on June 9, 1997, making it Chapter 169 of the session laws. It took effect on August 8, 1997.
