The Story

It was introduced on January 9, 1997 and referred to the Senate Insurance committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 10, 1997. The committee voted 6–1 to recommend that the Senate pass it with changes. On April 3, 1997 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. It crossed to the House and was referred to the House Commerce committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 15, 1997. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes by a vote of 12–1, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On May 20, 1997 the House voted to pass it with changes. On May 28, 1997 the Senate voted to reject the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. On May 29, 1997 the House adopted “Accede to Request for Committee of Conference”. A committee of conference met on June 2, 1997 to try to settle the differences between the two chambers' versions of the bill. On June 10, 1997 the House adopted “Conference Committee Report”. On June 10, 1997 the Senate adopted “Conference Committee Report” on a voice vote. An enrolled bill amendment () was adopted on June 10, 1997. These correct technical errors found after passage. The bill was enrolled on June 10, 1997 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on June 18, 1997, making it Chapter 230 of the session laws. It took effect on June 18, 1997.
