The Story
It was introduced on January 29, 1997 and referred to the House Legislative Administration committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 18, 1997. The majority recommended that the House pass it, and the minority recommended that the House kill it, by a vote of 7–6. On March 12, 1997 the House voted to adopt it on a division vote 181–163, then referred it on to the House Finance committee. The committee held a work session on March 17, 1997. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes by a vote of 19–1, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On April 2, 1997 the House voted to adopt it. It crossed to the Senate on April 10, 1997 and was referred to the Senate Internal Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on May 13, 1997. The committee voted unanimously, 4–0, to recommend that the Senate pass it. On May 22, 1997 the Senate voted to adopt it on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on June 10, 1997 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on June 17, 1997, making it Chapter 180 of the session laws.
