The Story

On January 29, 1997 the House adopted “Suspend Rules for intro on legis signed off after 01/17/1997”, on a motion by Rep. Wheeler & Burling. It was introduced on January 29, 1997 and referred to the House Commerce committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 18, 1997. The committee held work sessions on February 21, 1997, March 3, 1997 and March 5, 1997. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes unanimously, 15–0, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On March 18, 1997 the House voted to pass it with changes. It crossed to the Senate on March 27, 1997 and was referred to the Senate Banks committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 22, 1997. The committee voted unanimously, 6–0, to recommend that the Senate pass it with changes. On May 8, 1997 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. On May 28, 1997 the House voted to agree to the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on June 10, 1997 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. An enrolled bill amendment () was adopted on June 10, 1997. These correct technical errors found after passage. The governor signed it on June 20, 1997, making it Chapter 296 of the session laws. It took effect on June 20, 1997.
