The Story

It was introduced on January 9, 1997 and referred to the House Health, Human Services and Elderly Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 20, 1997. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it unanimously, 15–0, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On March 5, 1997 the House voted to pass it. It crossed to the Senate on March 13, 1997 and was referred to the Senate Public Institutions, Health and Human Services committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 25, 1997. The committee voted 6–1 to recommend that the Senate pass it with changes. On May 22, 1997 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. On May 28, 1997 the House voted to agree to the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on June 10, 1997 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. An enrolled bill amendment () was adopted on June 10, 1997. These correct technical errors found after passage. The governor signed it on June 19, 1997, making it Chapter 256 of the session laws. It took effect on August 18, 1997.
