The Story
It was introduced on January 9, 1997 and referred to the House Judiciary and Family Law committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 30, 1997. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it by a vote of 14–1, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On February 12, 1997 the House voted to pass it with changes. It crossed to the Senate on February 20, 1997 and was referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 19, 1997. The committee voted unanimously, 6–0, to recommend that the Senate pass it. On March 27, 1997 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on April 10, 1997 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on April 22, 1997, making it Chapter 17 of the session laws. It took effect on January 1, 1998.
