The Story
It was introduced on January 8, 1997 and referred to the House State-Federal Relations and Veterans Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 28, 1997. The committee held a work session on February 20, 1997. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes unanimously, 16–0, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On March 18, 1997 the House voted to pass it with changes. It crossed to the Senate on March 27, 1997 and was referred to the Senate Public Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 16, 1997. The committee voted unanimously, 7–0, to recommend that the Senate pass it with changes. On April 24, 1997 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. On May 14, 1997 the House voted to agree to the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on May 29, 1997 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on June 9, 1997, making it Chapter 133 of the session laws. It took effect on August 8, 1997.
