HB 1525 (1996)

relative to damages in suits brought by administrators of an estate.

  • Status: Vetoed, override failed
  • Term: 1995-1996
  • House committee: Judiciary and Family Law
  • Senate committee: Judiciary
  • Subject: Miscellaneous

The Story

It was introduced on January 3, 1996 and referred to the House Judiciary and Family Law committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 13, 1996. The committee held work sessions on February 20, 1996 and February 21, 1996. The majority recommended that the House pass it with changes, and the minority recommended that the House kill it, by a vote of 10–4. On March 6, 1996 the House voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. It crossed to the Senate on March 7, 1996 and was referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 10, 1996. The committee voted 4–2 to recommend that the Senate pass it. On April 17, 1996 the Senate adopted “Special Order to 04/18/1996 at 10:00” on a voice vote. On April 18, 1996 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on May 8, 1996 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor vetoed it on May 15, 1996. The legislature can override a veto with a two-thirds vote in both chambers. On June 13, 1996 the House voted 179–160 on overriding the governor's veto on a roll call, and the veto was sustained, failing to meet the two thirds threshold.
