  • Status: Signed into law
  • Term: 1995-1996
  • House committee: Judiciary and Family Law

The Story

It was introduced on January 3, 1996 and referred to the House Judiciary and Family Law committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 13, 1996. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes by a vote of 10–2, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. The bill was taken off the consent calendar on March 5, 1996. On March 7, 1996 the House voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. It crossed to the Senate on March 7, 1996 and was referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 8, 1996. The committee voted unanimously, 6–0, to recommend that the Senate pass it with changes. On April 17, 1996 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. On May 1, 1996 the House voted to agree to the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on May 16, 1996 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on May 24, 1996, making it Chapter 150 of the session laws. It took effect on January 1, 1997.
