relative to the child protection act.
- Status: Vetoed, override failed
- Term: 1993-1994
- House committee: Children, Youth and Juvenile Justice
- Senate committee: Judiciary
- Subject: Children
The Story
It was introduced on January 7, 1993 and referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 10, 1993. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes. On March 4, 1993 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. It crossed to the House on March 17, 1993 and was referred to the House Children, Youth and Juvenile Justice committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 20, 1993. The committee held a work session on April 27, 1993. The majority recommended that the House pass it with changes, and the minority recommended that the House send it back to committee, by a vote of 14–6. On May 13, 1993 the House rejected a motion to send it back to committee on a roll call 123–209, on a motion by Rep. Cogswell. On May 13, 1993 the House voted to pass it with changes on a roll call 240–90. On May 25, 1993 the Senate voted to reject the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. On May 25, 1993 the House adopted “Accede to Request for Committee of Conference” on a voice vote. A committee of conference met on June 3, 1993 to try to settle the differences between the two chambers' versions of the bill. On June 9, 1993 the House adopted “Conference Committee Report” on a voice vote. On June 9, 1993 the Senate adopted “Conference Committee Report” on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on June 9, 1993 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor — and an enrolled bill amendment (3134) was adopted to correct technical errors found after passage. An enrolled bill amendment () was adopted on a voice vote on June 17, 1993. These correct technical errors found after passage. The bill was enrolled on June 17, 1993 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor vetoed it on July 2, 1993. The legislature can override a veto with a two-thirds vote in both chambers. On September 15, 1993 the Senate voted 12–11 on overriding the governor's veto on a roll call, and the veto was sustained, failing to meet the two thirds threshold.
