HB 558 (1993)

requiring the board of education to submit its proposed rules relative to standards and statewide testing and assessment to the standing legislative education committees for approval or objections.

  • Status: Vetoed, override failed
  • Term: 1993-1994
  • House committee: Education
  • Senate committee: Education
  • Subject: Education - General

The Story

It was introduced on January 7, 1993 and referred to the House Education committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 3, 1993. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes unanimously, 15–0. On March 10, 1993 the House adopted “Special Order to 03/11/1993”. On March 11, 1993 the House voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. It crossed to the Senate on March 11, 1993 and was referred to the Senate Education committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 23, 1993. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. On May 11, 1993 the Senate voted to lay it on the table on a voice vote. On May 19, 1993 the Senate adopted “Take from Table” on a voice vote. On May 19, 1993 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on June 9, 1993 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor vetoed it on June 15, 1993. The legislature can override a veto with a two-thirds vote in both chambers. On June 29, 1993 the House voted 204–142 on overriding the governor's veto on a roll call, and the veto was sustained, failing to meet the two thirds threshold.
