HB 1424-FN (1990)

regulating abortions.

  • Status: Vetoed, override failed
  • Term: 1989-1990
  • House committee: Judiciary
  • Senate committee: Judiciary
  • Subject: Miscellaneous

The Story

It was introduced on January 3, 1990 and referred to the House Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 24, 1990. The majority recommended that the House pass it with changes, and the minority recommended that the House kill it, by a vote of 16–3. On February 13, 1990 the House voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. On February 13, 1990 the House failed “Reconsider” on a voice vote, on a motion by Rep. Burling. It crossed to the Senate on February 15, 1990 and was referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 19, 1990. The committee's amendment () was adopted on March 29, 1990, changing the text of the bill. A floor amendment () was rejected on March 29, 1990. On March 29, 1990 the Senate voted to pass it with changes. On April 3, 1990 the House voted to agree to the other chamber's changes on a roll call 200–135. The bill was enrolled on April 10, 1990 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. On April 17, 1990 the House voted 215–157 on overriding the governor's veto on a roll call, and the veto was sustained, failing to meet the two thirds threshold.
