It simply says, \"No new tax shall be levied, directly or indirectly, upon a person's income, from whatever source it is derived.\" The language is very carefully chosen to forbid only new taxes on individual income. Existing taxes on income, such as the interest and dividends tax, will be unaffected unless first repealed. The goal of the amendment is to acknowledge that the income earned by the citizens of our state is theirs and theirs alone, through their hard work and risk and savings. Granite Staters of every profession and income level work hard to feed their families, to save for their children's education, to keep their businesses afloat, to donate to their favored charities, to pay for their rents, their mortgages, their utilities, their medicines, and a multitude of other expenses, and it would be an incredible injustice for the state to demand some portion of that money.
