The Health, Human Services, and Elderly Affairs Committee voted unanimously for the motion of Refer for Interim Study to establish a commission to study the feasibility of reopening a state psychiatric hospital for adults with severe mental illness. The commission would review current services, identify gaps, and recommend next steps by November 1, 2026. Serious questions were raised, during the hearing on this bill, as to whether such a facility is necessary. Concerns were expressed by some committee members as to how effective the appointment of yet another commission to address a problem would be. Vote 18-0.
